Improved Sign effects

witcher-3 — Mods & Enhancements

Improved Sign effects

This standalone mod intensifies the visual effects of Igni and Aard signs, making them look more like the cinematic trailers—Igni now has a roaring, particle-heavy flame with embers that linger, and Aard releases a shockwave with visible air distortion and debris. It does not change damage or gameplay stats, only the visual particle systems (e.g., 'fx_igni_flame' and 'fx_aard_shockwave') in the 'signs.ws' and 'fx' files. Players install it to make combat feel more impactful, especially when using mods like 'Enhanced Signs' that increase sign damage, because the visual intensity now matches the mechanical power. It also fixes the vanilla issue where Igni's flame looks like a thin stream rather than a burst.

🎯 Tips & Tricks

Adjust the particle density to avoid FPS drops during Igni spam

Open 'modImprovedSignEffects\content\fx\signs\igni\igni_fx.w2p' in a text editor (like Notepad++). Find the line 'ParticleEmitter' and set 'p_emitterDensity' to 0.5 (default 1.0). This halves the number of embers, improving performance in close-quarters combat. For Aard, edit 'aard_fx.w2p' and set 'p_shockwaveScale' to 0.8 to reduce the screen-shake effect if it causes motion sickness.

Make Igni's flame color more orange (or blue) to match your playstyle

In the same 'igni_fx.w2p', look for 'p_colorGradient' and change the RGB values from (1.0, 0.5, 0.0) to (0.2, 0.5, 1.0) for a blue flame (like a magic igni). This is purely cosmetic, but it helps distinguish between a standard Igni and a 'Pheromone' enhanced Igni if you use mods like 'Sign Intensity Overhaul'.

Disable the Aard screen distortion if you use 'Crossbow' mods

The Aard shockwave effect can interfere with the crossbow's zoom-in camera, causing a blurry screen after firing. Edit 'aard_fx.w2p' and set 'p_distortionAmount' to 0.0. This removes the radial blur while keeping the debris and shockwave visual, so your crossbow aim remains clear.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Improved Sign Effects conflicts with 'Visual Immersion Overhaul' (VIO) because VIO includes its own Igni/Aard effects

You must disable VIO's sign effects by deleting the 'fx\signs' folder from VIO's mod directory, or the game will crash on load due to duplicate 'fx' definitions. If you want both, install Improved Sign Effects AFTER VIO and let it overwrite the files—then use Script Merger to confirm no conflicts in 'signs.ws'.

Mod causes a black screen when casting Aard in a cave with 'Ultimate Lighting Mod' (ULM)

ULM changes the global light parameters, and the Aard shockwave's particle shader (which uses a custom 'light' blend mode) can glitch with ULM's dynamic shadows. Fix by editing 'aard_fx.w2p' and setting 'p_lightingMode' to '0' (unlit). This removes the dynamic light from the shockwave, preventing the black screen, while keeping the visual effect.
