Skyrim Flora Overhaul

Skyrim Flora Overhaul (SFO) replaces and expands the base game's trees, grasses, and plants with higher-resolution models and textures, adding new species like aspen variants, ferns, and dense undergrowth. It changes the visual density of forests, tundra, and swamps, affecting performance in areas like Falkreath and The Rift due to increased poly counts and texture sizes. Players install it to make Skyrim's wilderness feel lush and immersive, but it requires careful LOD generation to avoid pop-in and can conflict with mods that edit the same tree or grass records.

🎯 Tips & Tricks

Generate LODs with DynDOLOD for SFO

After installing SFO, download DynDOLOD 3.0 from Nexus, run its TexGen (in the DynDOLOD folder) to generate grass/tree LOD textures, then run DynDOLOD.exe. In the DynDOLOD settings, select 'High' preset, check 'Generate grass LOD' if using SFO's grass module, and output to a new mod folder. Place that output LAST in your load order, after all tree mods, to prevent distant tree pop-in.

Configure SFO's INI for performance

Open the SFO.ini file (located in your Skyrim Data folder) and adjust 'iMinGrassSize' from 40 to 60-70 if you experience FPS drops in grassy areas like Whiterun tundra. Also set 'bAllowCreateGrass' to 0 if you use a grass mod like 'Cathedral Grass' to avoid double-grass rendering. Save and restart the game.

Install SFO after other tree mods

In your mod manager (Vortex or MO2), ensure SFO's ESP (Skyrim Flora Overhaul.esp) loads AFTER mods like 'Enhanced Vanilla Trees' or '3D Trees'. To do this in MO2, drag SFO's plugin below them in the right pane. If using Vortex, set SFO to 'After' those mods in the 'Plugins' tab. This ensures SFO's tree models override theirs, preventing missing textures.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Black or purple tree trunks with 'Enhanced Vanilla Trees' (EVT) installed

EVT and SFO both modify tree NIF files. Install the 'SFO - EVT Tree Patch' from the SFO Nexus page, or manually delete SFO's 'meshes\landscape\trees' folder to let EVT handle the models. Load order: EVT first, then SFO's ESP, but keep SFO's textures active. This resolves the texture path conflicts.

Grass flickering or disappearing with 'Cathedral Landscapes'

Cathedral Landscapes has its own grass module. In SFO's INI, set 'bAllowCreateGrass=0' and disable SFO's grass plugin (Skyrim Flora Overhaul.esp) in your mod manager. Alternatively, use the 'SFO - Cathedral Patch' which rebalances grass density. Load Cathedral Landscapes AFTER SFO to ensure its grass records win.
