Tutorial Chest Summoning

baldurs-gate-3 — Mods & Enhancements

Tutorial Chest Summoning

This mod adds a unique spell-like ability to your character's hotbar that lets you summon the exact Tutorial Chest from the Nautiloid crash site (the one containing the Potion of Healing, the Idol of Silvanus, and the key to the locked door) at any time, anywhere in the game. It's primarily used by modders and players who want to inject their own custom items into a playthrough without using the console or writing a script, as the chest acts as a persistent storage that can be re-summoned after being emptied or destroyed. The chest's inventory is tied to your save file, so items placed inside persist across long rests and area transitions, making it a convenient way to transfer gear between party members or stash loot for later without using a camp chest.

🎯 Tips & Tricks

Summon the chest only in camp to avoid item duplication bugs

Open the radial wheel (default 'Tab' on PC) and assign the 'Summon Tutorial Chest' ability to a hotkey slot. Then, teleport to your camp (via the map or using the 'Long Rest' button) and use the ability there. If you summon it in a dungeon or city, the chest may spawn inside walls or on top of NPCs, causing items to be lost or duplicated when you leave the area.

Use the chest to inject modded items without a mod manager

After installing this mod, go to your game's Mods folder (usually 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data\Mods'), find any item mod you want to test, and copy its .pak file into the chest's inventory via the 'Add to Chest' debug menu that appears when you right-click the chest. This bypasses the need to manually edit your save file or use the LSLib console, and the items will be available to all party members immediately.

Set the chest's spawn position to your character's feet for easy access

Open the mod's config file located at 'C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods\TutorialChestSummoning\config.json'. Change the 'spawnOffset' value from '0' to '1.5' (or any positive number) to make the chest appear directly in front of your character instead of at the exact spawn point, which often places it out of reach on uneven terrain.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Chest appears but is invisible or cannot be interacted with after loading a save

This is a known conflict with 'ImprovedUI Assets' (the UI overhaul mod). Disable 'ImprovedUI Assets' and re-enable it after loading your save, or manually move the 'TutorialChestSummoning.pak' file to the bottom of your load order in the BG3 Mod Manager (after ImprovedUI but before any script extender-dependent mods). This resolves the mesh loading issue.

The summon ability is missing from your hotbar after a long rest or party member change

This happens when the mod's spell is not registered in the 'Spellbook' due to a conflict with '5e Spells' mod. Open the BG3 Mod Manager, select 'Tutorial Chest Summoning' and click 'Move to Top' (above 5e Spells). Then, in-game, open your spellbook (K key), go to the 'Common' tab, and drag the ability back onto your hotbar. If it still disappears, delete the 'Mods\TutorialChestSummoning\meta.lsx' file and re-launch the game.
